APS Rate Case:
Affordable electricity isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity.
For many Sun City West residents, electricity powers more than lights and appliances. It keeps our homes safe and comfortable during Arizona’s extreme summer heat, supports medical equipment, and enables many residents to remain independent in their own homes.
When utility rates increase, the impact is felt throughout our community—especially by retirees and those living on fixed incomes. Every dollar added to a monthly utility bill affects household budgets and long-term financial security.
That is why PORA actively follows utility rate cases before the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) and advocates for transparency, fairness, and accountability on behalf of Sun City West residents.
Why This Matters
APS periodically files rate cases requesting adjustments to the rates customers pay for electric service. These proceedings are complex and involve extensive testimony, financial analysis, public comment, and regulatory review.
While utilities must recover the costs of maintaining and improving the electric grid, PORA believes every proposed increase deserves careful scrutiny to ensure that rates are fair, justified, and in the public interest.
Residents deserve confidence that:
- Rate increases are supported by demonstrated need.
- Customers are not paying more than necessary.
- Major infrastructure investments are carefully evaluated.
- The voices of residential customers are heard throughout the regulatory process.
PORA’s Advocacy
PORA believes Sun City West residents deserve strong representation when decisions affecting their monthly utility bills are being made.
Our advocacy efforts include:
- Monitoring APS rate proceedings before the Arizona Corporation Commission.
- Participating in public hearings and submitting public comments.
- Working with organizations such as the Residential Utility Consumer Office (RUCO) and other community partners when appropriate.
- Educating residents about proposed rate changes and their potential impacts.
- Encouraging public participation throughout the regulatory process.
Our objective is simple: ensure that the interests of Sun City West residents are fully represented before important decisions are made.
Why Fixed-Income Communities Are Different
Communities like Sun City West face unique challenges.
Many residents carefully manage household budgets based on retirement income. Unlike some households, many retirees have limited opportunities to offset rising costs through increased earnings.
When electricity, water, insurance, and other essential services become more expensive, those increases compound over time and can significantly affect affordability.
PORA believes these realities should be carefully considered whenever utility rate decisions are made.
Looking Ahead
Arizona continues to experience rapid population growth and increasing demand for electricity. At the same time, the state is seeing significant investment in new infrastructure, technology, and large-scale industrial development.
As Arizona plans for its energy future, PORA believes utility planning should balance economic growth with affordability, reliability, and the long-term interests of residential customers.
Every major investment should be carefully evaluated to ensure costs are allocated fairly and responsibly.
